BATON ROUGE, La. – For all West Virginia accomplished this season, coach Mike Carey sounds more concerned with what the Mountaineers have not done.
Carey says his program, which won the Big 12 regular season title, receives little national recognition because its relative lack of NCAA tournament success.
WVU is in its fifth straight tournament, but the Mountaineers have never made it past the second round, going 7-9 all-time. Seeded second in the Louisville Region, West Virginia (29-4) opens play in Baton Rouge on Sunday afternoon against 15th seed Albany, the America East champions.
The winner of that game will face either No. 7 seed LSU (19-12) or 10th-seeded Georgia Tech (20-11), which meet in the opening game in Baton Rouge on Sunday. LSU is 16-3 in NCAA tournament games on its home court.
